Ardagh Glass Packaging is closing a plant in Illinois, which will affect hundreds of employees.
The glass plant in the Chicago suburb of Dolton is near the Indiana border, and 316 employees are affected by its closure, according to a notice filed with the state on Feb. 4. Layoffs are set to begin May 1.
The company plans to close this location due to market conditions, according to an emailed statement. Customers will be supplied from other U.S. facilities in Ardagh’s network.
“Ardagh Glass Packaging-North America remains focused on enhancing its overall performance, while aligning its supply of high-quality, sustainable glass packaging with the demand from the food and beverage markets,” the statement says.
Ardagh Glass has closed multiple facilities in the past year. In November, it detailed a plan to permanently close a glass production facility in Seattle that served wine customers, after temporarily closing that plant earlier in the year; 245 employees were affected. Last summer, Ardagh announced the closure of a glass production facility in Houston, affecting 220 people.
In its third-quarter earnings report in October, Ardagh Group reported that its North American glass segment experienced a 9% year-over-year dip in revenue due to unfavorable volumes and mix.
